Inpainting
Short answer
Regenerating only a selected region of an existing image.
In inpainting you mask a region of an image and regenerate only that area; everything else is preserved pixel for pixel.
Its most common uses: removing an unwanted object, fixing a detail (a broken hand, for instance), changing a garment's colour, improving a face.
Adobe Firefly's Generative Fill inside Photoshop is inpainting's most accessible form; in Stable Diffusion the same job is done with more control.
