Which should you choose?

Midjourney if you have no GPU, do not want technical setup and simply want beautiful images. Stable Diffusion if you need to produce the same image in a specific way repeatedly, want to teach the model your own face or product, or refuse a monthly fee.

Is "free" actually free?

It is true that Stable Diffusion is free, but that does not mean the total cost is zero.

Good results need a GPU with at least 8 GB of VRAM; 12 GB or more makes it comfortable. If you do not have such a card, buying one costs about as much as several years of Midjourney.

The second cost is time. The first working install can take hours; learning the features that provide the real value — ControlNet and LoRA — takes days. That time is not free.

Do the arithmetic this way: if you generate a few images a month, Midjourney's 10 dollars is cheaper than the setup and learning time. If you generate dozens a day or need control, Stable Diffusion pays for itself within a few months.
